How to find Marathi consonant forms on the Shift layer

Use a small consonant comparison to learn what the Marathi Shift layer actually provides.

The Marathi page uses direct Devanagari mappings rather than Roman-letter transliteration. This exercise pairs a base consonant with two shifted forms so you can check the layer before composing a longer passage.

How to use the Marathi Keyboard

Try this keyboard: Marathi Keyboard

01

Prepare a separate practice line

Open the Marathi keyboard. If a browser draft is already present, save it before using the trash button to start this exercise. Put the caret in the main editor and make sure Shift, Caps and Alt Gr are off. This gives the sample a predictable starting point.

Locate K, J and N in the physical-position hints. The base J output is र, while Shift changes that position to ऱ. The sample is a set of separate characters, not a word, so the spaces help keep the mapped forms distinguishable.

02

Enter the three-character exercise

Use these positions in order: K for क; then Shift + J for ऱ; then Shift + N for ळ. Add one Space between each output. When using on-screen modifiers, switch them off before moving to a different layer. The resulting editor text is क ऱ ळ. It is a character exercise, not a word or a translation.

For the two shifted outputs, inspect the active labels rather than treating Shift as a case command. Keep Shift active for both J and N, then turn it off. The visible map supplies those forms directly; it does not infer them from a Roman spelling.

03

Check the result before reusing it

Compare the second and third forms carefully with their keys. If you select one character to replace it, the next insertion replaces that selection. Use Undo after an accidental replacement and retain the original spaced exercise for the file comparison.

Before using the layout for actual text, check its sign coverage. The retained base D and F positions both output ॑. Missing joining or vowel characters must come from another input source; changing the font cannot supply them or repair a sequence automatically.

04

Save the exercise as a PNG image

Open Text style from the font icon. Use Arial at 28 px, Automatic color, and Left to right direction. Turn bold, italic, underline and strikethrough off. These settings apply to the whole editor. A font changes appearance, not the stored characters; your device may use a fallback font for unsupported shapes. Choose Done to close the style dialog.

Choose Save image to save the complete exercise as a PNG, with centered lines and dark text on a white background. Open the file and compare it with the sample. For an editable alternative, choose Save Word (.docx) to create a real .docx, or use Copy text for plain text. These actions use all the editor text even when only part is selected.

Tips for this layout

Distinguish mapping from spelling

A visible character can be available without being correct for a particular word. Use a reviewed spelling when the text matters, especially for names.

Inspect numbers separately

The base number row starts with Devanagari digits. Check the intended numeral form before mixing a number with your text.

A FEW USEFUL DETAILS

Common questions

What does Shift with J insert?

It inserts ऱ, while the base J position inserts र. This is an explicit alternate mapping, not uppercase conversion.

Can Roman letters be converted into Marathi automatically?

This page does not transliterate Roman spelling. Choose the displayed Devanagari characters or paste reviewed text from another input method.

What if a joining sign is absent?

Use another suitable input source for the missing character or the complete passage, then paste it here for editing and export.

YOUR TURN

Try the Marathi exercise

Compare the three consonant forms, then verify that the layout covers the signs required by your actual Marathi passage.
